The şape (şъапэ / шапэ) is a traditional type of hat in Circassian culture. The name originates from the Adyghe language (one of the Caucasian languages) and generally means "hat" or "headgear." However, when "şape" is used colloquially, it refers to a traditional, wide-brimmed hat made of felt or similar natural material, specifically designed for sun protection .

  • Origin: Caucasus (especially Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia regions)

  • Material: Usually made of natural felt or wool fabric.

  • Shape: It has a round or oval top with a wide brim surrounding it.

  • Function: Used especially by farmers , shepherds and those working in the open field to protect from the sun.

  • Cultural Use: It is also worn as an accessory in Circassian folk dances, especially in dances such as Хьакъуэж (Hakulaj) .

  • Symbolic Meaning: Represents simplicity, naturalness, and harmony with nature. It is also a part of the traditional lifestyle.
